π Movie Review: Lava (2014) π
Director: James Ford Murphy
Runtime: 7 minutes
Sweetness Level: π₯° "Heart-meltingly sweet"
You know how some movies punch you right in the heart and you’re not even mad about it? Yeah, that’s Lava. In a blissful 7 minutes, Pixar manages to tell a whole dang love story — featuring two volcanoes — and leave you sniffling into your popcorn like it’s the last day of summer camp.
The plot is simple but devastatingly cute: a lonely volcano named Uku floats in the middle of the ocean, singing his longing for someone to "lava." (Get it? Love... lava? You get it.) As he waits — for literal eons — for companionship, the ocean does its magic beneath the waves. Spoiler alert: love finds a way. Because it’s Pixar, and they’re legally required to crush your emotions and then gently put them back together.
Visually, Lava is stunning. The ocean sparkles, the sunsets glow, and the animation gives the volcanoes so much personality you forget they're giant piles of molten rock. Plus, the ukulele song? Certified earworm. Good luck not humming it for three straight business days.
Is it cheesy? Absolutely. But it’s the good kind of cheese, like warm mozzarella on a perfect pizza. Lava doesn't try to be clever or complicated — it just aims for the heart, fires its adorable little arrow, and hits bullseye.
Final Verdict:
⭐ 9/10
Watch it when you need a 7-minute vacation from the crushing weight of adulthood. Preferably with tissues. And maybe a tropical drink.
